Nelson Curet, an assistant football coach at Georgetown Highschool, died on Saturday, July 1, in a "tragic" incident, according to Georgetown Public Schools.

“Nelson was an integral member of the Georgetown football family," said Georgetown High School Football Coach Mike Hill. "His commitment to the support and development of the young men in the Georgetown community was bar none."

Hill said Curet's impact on students was "immeasurable."

Curet was shot and killed on Saturday at 27 McGreevy Way in Roxbury, according to the Boston Police Department.

"Nelson Curet was not a guy from the street or “gang,"' Curet's cousin wrote in a Facebook post. "He was our only male college graduate in our entire generation! He was an inspiration to many, a son, father, brother, family member, advocate, coach, and friend."

His family created a GoFundMe to raise funds in the aftermath of Curet's death. The fundraiser garnered over $8,000 in donations in only two days.

"Can't believe someone as good and loved like you could go such a terrible way," wrote one donor to the campaign. "You will be missed so much."

Georgetown Public Schools has provided a counselor for students coping with the loss of Curet, and are working to facilitate travel for football team players to attend Curet's funeral.

His services are scheduled for Friday, July 7, from 9 a.m. to noon at the William F. Spencer & Son Funeral Home, located at 575 E. Broadway, South Boston. His burial will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery, 427 Cummins Highway, Boston.
